Nola Ochs earns BA at the age of 95… and is now going for the MA!

Born in 1911, Nola Ochs completed a BA in 2007! Not satisfied, Nola is currently working on an MA degree! Nola completed the BA at Fort Hays Steve University in Hays, Kansas. After completing the degree in 2007, Nola was a guest lecturer on a nine-day Caribbean cruise!

Nola went back to school and took her first college class in 1978 when she was 68. She didn’t go back to school with the intent of earning a degree. It was all about socially connecting with people and getting out there. Nola says “I just wanted to get out and be with people… I wanted to be involved. College was something for fun, something to do.” Nola took a class or two for many years and in 2006 (at the age of 94!) she decided to participate full-time in the program. One of her classmates (in an Old Testment class) was her 21-year-old grandaughter! Nola has 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren!

Nola was fortunate that she was able to get out and about to make it to a classroom and engage in lfietime learning. Many older adults and seniors are unable to leave their home or have an extremely difficult time doing so. Engage As You Age allows homebound and isolated seniors to have the very same intergenerational social connections and lifetime learning that Nola had… all from their own homes! Engage As You Age visits homebound and isolated older adults and seniors at their place of residence and engages them in topics of discussion and activities that they love. These visits not only combat loneliness, depression and isolation, they’re also a ton of fun!
