World Games – Octogenarians, Nonagenarians and Centenarians Breaking World Records

Last month, the World Masters Games took place in Sydney. A 100-year-old shot put champion wasn’t the oldest participant! Over 28,000 people participated from 95 countries. The ages of the participants ranged from 25 to 101.

Ruth Frith, the 100-year-old shot put champion, took home three gold medals and set the world shot-put record for the over 100 group. Frith was confident in her abilities and said “As long as I didn’t foul, I was going to win it.”

Below is Ruth’s record-breaking moment:

The oldest participant in the games was 101-year-old Reg Trewin who lives in New South Wales. He made his debut in the World Masters Games and participated in the lawn bowls tournament. Although Trewin lost 17-6 in the over-60s mixed pairs, he said “I’m getting better as I get older.”

An octogenarian man going by the name of “Santa Claus” ran BAREFOOT (!!!) in the 10 km roadrace and 100-meter race. He even sported a long white beard!

Olga Kotelko, 90 and from Vancouver, Canada. She is quite possibly the oldest long jump competitor in the world.
