Bay Area Summit, A Quarterly Newsletter for Midlife and Older Adults recently wrote an article on Engage As You Age. The article, “Engaging While Aging: What’s Good for the Brain is Good for the Soul,” describes our services that many residents of assisted living and continuing care retirement homes have benefited from. It also captures the many instances of seniors that age in place who have benefited from our social visits and companionship. The article also does an excellent job differentiating what we do from homecare and caregiving services in San Francisco. It highlights the added social stimulation for seniors that our services provide. Thank you John Doxey for such a great article!

The Belvedere-Tiburon Library in Marin County will host a senior week from Tuesday, July 13th through Friday, July 16th. This will be a great event for Marin County residents that are interested in learning about homecare, caregiving, aging in place, Alzheimer’s disease in Marin, dementia and anything else related to being an elder or having parents that are seniors.

Engage As You Age’s Ben Lewis will appear on several panels during the Marin County library’s senior week event. He’ll lead the keynote panel called “Senior Care 101″ which will address everything from how to screen and vet a homecare agency in Tiburon (and any other San Francisco Bay Area communities) to what local resources can help point you in the right direction (no matter your financial situation). This is a great panel if you’ve got an aging parent and are wondering about what is out there to help you. Learn how to save money and stress by asking the right questions in a largely unregulated industry.

Lewis will also lead a workshop on “Aging In Place Technologies” on Wednesday, July 14th. Contact Engage As You Age to learn more about Lewis’ panels or go to the Tiburon-Belvedere Library website to learn more about the event.

Engage As You Age is excited about its very own Activity Specialist, Caitlyn Louchard, starring as Emily Dickinson in the play Tell It Slant. A musical drama about the youthful love of poet Emily Dickinson, Tell It Slant, will have a month-long run at the SouthSide Theater in Building D at the Fort Mason Center.

Louchard, an New York University theater graduate, is the lead in the play (as Emily Dickinson) has worked as an Activity Specialist with Engage As You Age visiting seniors that share her love of theater. She’s also currently facilitating a bi-weekly group discussion on Shakespeare for Engage As You Age as well. That class takes place at Rhoda Goldman, an assisted living community in San Francisco, CA.

The Castro Courier just wrote a great article on Engage As You Age in their March edition. The neighborhood newspaper is based out of San Francisco. The Castro Theater, Dolores Park and other attractions are part of the area.

Engage As You Age Activity Specialist Stacey Palevsky recently wrote about her experience working for us. By day Stacey writes for J, The Jewish Weekly of Northern California. One evening a week she works for us by visiting an 83-year-old elder woman named Selma that lives in an assisted living facility in the Sunset district of San Francisco. Stacey is one of many fabulous people that Engage As You Age has paired up with seniors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Stacey writes that she wasn’t randomly paired with Selma but that “We are a great fit for one another.” She adds that “I bring the outside into her apartment, along with news articles that she can no longer read on her own, positive energy and a youthful outlook.” That’s exactly the goal of what we do.

Selma is unable to participate in many of the facility’s group activities that require residents to have good vision. Selma has macular degeneration and has difficulty reading. She’s also very lonely as there aren’t many people in the facility that share her love of politics and history. Selma also isn’t a fan of bingo and arts and crafts which are often the bread and butter of many assisted living facility activity plans.

San Francisco Bay Area tv station CBS 5 will air a 30-minute tv special on Engage As You Age on Thursday, January 14th @ 7 pm.

The show will air after the local CBS 5 news in the time slot that Eye on the Bay normally airs. Judge Judy will follow us!
